Shantallow Young Leaders Project

After extensive consultation led via Co-operation Ireland with community and statutory agencies, within the Shantallow community, the Young Leaders project was initiated in May 2011 with funding support from the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin.

The project targets 30 young people in aged 15-19 years who are disengaged in their communities. Working through an advisory body of 12 local organisations and with the appointment of 3 mentors managed via Active Communities Network, the project seeks to challenge anti-social behaviour, and engage young people in activities that take them away from street corners and into constructive programmes.

Our approach includes:

  • Outreach programmes and referral mechanisms to engage marginalised / excluded young people.

  • Community based sports and youth projects.

  • Personal and social development initiatives.

  • Training and leadership courses.

By working with large groups of young people and stakeholders from the wider community the Shantallow Young Leaders project will offer participants the opportunity to make positive life choices, whilst promoting positive activity within the community. The programme will also reduce fear of crime and negative perceptions of young people in the Shantallow community.
